WELCOME TO MY BCPA PSYCHOLOGIST PROFILE!
CHOOSING A PSYCHOLOGIST IS AN IMPORTANT STEP. I hope this summary will help you make an informed decision about whether to contact me.
MY QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION. I am a Registered Psychologist in BC #1028 with the College of Health and Care Providers and a Registered Member of the Canadian Health Service Providers in Psychology. I have over 25 years of clinical experience in private practice and other settings, including hospitals, outpatient mental health units, and specialty clinics.
I earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, BC, and completed my one-year residency at Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital in Ontario (now called Grand River Hospital); both programs are accredited by the Canadian Psychological Association. I also spent many years training doctoral-level psychologists of the future and leading a clinical psychology training program at the University of Victoria, where I still serve as Professor Emerita.
I love practicing psychology, and I continue seeking learning opportunities and continuing education that might be helpful in my work with clients. I value working on behalf of my clients as a member of their healthcare team.
AT PRESENT, I AM WELCOMING CLIENTS OF ALL AGES INTO MY PRACTICE. Every new client is seen for a two-hour intake assessment that includes a discussion of the individual's concerns and goals, history, background information, and possibly some psychological testing. The intake assessment is a collaborative effort that helps us lay out an evidence-based therapy plan and is individualized to the client's personality, needs, and preferences. I draw on various therapy techniques, including cognitive-behavioural, mindfulness, interpersonal, and psychodynamic approaches. Some clients seek my services for a more in-depth psychological assessment, also called a psychodiagnostic or mental health assessment. A client who chooses this more comprehensive psychological assessment might be an individual who has tried out other counselling and treatment approaches but has not made the progress they had hoped for and feels there are questions about their psychological functioning that remain unanswered. They may wish to gain a deeper understanding of themselves, including the possibility of being offered a precise diagnosis and more specific treatment and health management directions. Sometimes, clients refer themselves for these in-depth assessments; at other times, family physicians, psychiatrists, or other healthcare providers may refer them to me. I might also hear from a concerned family member who calls to scope my services. Some clients prefer not to be offered a diagnosis, which I respect; in this case, the feedback takes a descriptive format.
PSYCHOLOGICAL CARE FOR HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS. The BC healthcare system is currently stressed, which affects patients and providers. I have experience and interest in providing psychological care to healthcare providers experiencing stress, burnout, and mental health challenges. It is one small way I can contribute to the face of challenges in the healthcare system.
OLDER ADULT CLIENTS. In addition to providing psychological services to young adult clients and individuals in their middle adult years, I am particularly interested in the needs of older adult clients facing transitions in their work lives, family and friendships, and physical and emotional well-being. I am attuned to ageing issues in a complex world; my goal is always to assist older clients in identifying and addressing challenges and living the healthiest and most fulfilling lives possible.
SERVICES I DO NOT OFFER. I am not a neuropsychologist, and I am not qualified to assess traumatic brain injuries, ADHD, learning, autism, or neurocognitive concerns. However, I can consider diagnosed neurocognitive problems when developing a treatment plan and other recommendations. I will also screen for neurocognitive-type concerns and let you know if I feel you might benefit from a neuropsychologist assessment.
HOW TO CONTACT ME. If you want to contact me, please email me at dr.marion.ehrenberg@gmail.com or (250) 384-6471.
I look forward to hearing from you, answering any questions you might have, and welcoming you into my practice. If I think another psychologist may better fit you and your needs or has a particular specialty area that might benefit you, I will discuss those options with you. The most important thing is receiving the best psychological service for yourself in the most timely manner possible.
UPDATE ON JULY 8 2024. I am currently accepting new clients. When emailing me, kindly indicate if you are looking for a psychological assessment only, psychological assessment and treatment, or if you are unsure. PREVIOUS CLIENTS who wish to return for additional services will be accommodated as quickly as possible. Thank you!
